ABOUT SANDRA

Sandra Lalopoulos was born and educated in Sydney and now resides in the Hunter Valley, NSW .   After attending East Sydney Technical College, National Art School at Darlinghurst, she travelled extensively overseas living in London for 2 years then Athens, Greece for 8 years.

During these years Sandra was privileged to live and observe the parochial times of not only the villages but the bigger cities of Greece.   So began the love of the Mediterranean light and the everyday lifestyle of the villages throughout Greece.  This captivated Sandra and her paintings reflect that love and passion of not only the light but the colours and textures of stone buildings and architectural shapes that are unstructured but retain a beautiful balance with the landscape Sandra has always loved textile and design and she found in Greece that inspiration to put these aspects into her art.

Working in watercolour firstly she found she needed to create this feeling of texture,  so she transferred to oils where she could explore the richness.  (This wonderful medium of texture is also beautifully used in Sandra’s portraits.)

Clients have connected with the feeling of their ancestral homeland and their village lives, squares, tavernas and surrounding landscapes created by Sandra,   so there is a strong following of commissions depicting memories.  These commissions can be found in Australia, Canada, Greece and the UK. Where possible Sandra travels throughout Australia and still travels to Greece and now Japan where in all three countries family reside.  Here the brush finds everyday life scenes fascinating and inspirational.

A recent Judge’s comment is as Sandra acknowledges, what she strives to achieve, “Beautifully handled paint.  A direct representational work, where a sense of atmosphere is well captured”.
